I have been a mariner all my life - although not necessarily on sailing vessels. "Sea Stories" have always appealed to me, and with my background, particularly the Farley Mowat "Foundation Maritime" series. The Hornblower TV mini series that was produced by A&E a few years ago has been a favorite of mine as it rang as authentic and interesting with plenty of action and characters that were human - flawed but trying, generally, to do their very best under difficult circumstances. And in all this time, I had never actually read the books!Well with that long-winded preamble, I am pleased to report that Forester's narrative lives up to the hype and reputation. The stories are told in a straightforward, matter of fact way but with a great edge of adventure and, as with the mini series, plausibility and realism. The actions and reactions of Hornblower and the crews aboard the ships are as true to life as I can imagine. Forester has created a great role model for young people that might aspire to be the best at anything they might choose to be - not just seafarers. In the case of Hornblower, the hero is not particularly strong, attractive or charismatic, but excels by his wits, intelligence and strong moral compass.
Great, easy to read tales that for me, have stood the test of time exceptionally well. Well worth it if you have not yet had the chance to set sail on the Indefatigable or other sailing ship, or if you wish to rejoin the crew after years of hiatus - either way it should be an enjoyable and thrilling journey.

Mr Midshipman Hornblower Hornblower Saga Paperback C S Forester 9780316289122 Books Reviews
This is the first volume in the Hornblower series. (That is to say this is the story of Hornblower as he enters the Royal Navy. It was not written first.)
This is an ideal bridge between juvenile novels and grown-up books. The teenage hero is an adventurous role model for boys. It is historically sound, educational and full of self-reflection. It is a darn fine read.
This book, in a paperback edition, make a great gift.
If you enjoy historical fiction written in an older style, you'll love this (like I did) - it's exciting and takes the reader to a different time and a different place (really a different world). I had to keep looking up sailing terms as I don't know a thing about sailing, but that was fun too as I learned something. The writing style is very easy reading. It's understandable why the Hornblower books were so popular in their day. I fully intend to read the others in the series (this one is the first).
I am reading the Hornblower series for perhaps the sixth time in the past twenty years, but it is my first reading of it in the version.
Considering the age of the series, I should think new readers will most likely have been referred to C.S. Forester by a friend or loved one. Remember that person as someone who thinks very well of you.
This is among the very best adventure series ever written. It is almost certainly the very best one that begins with its hero throwing up.
That said, I cannot recommend this version. I own many books on , and prefer to printed books, despite being on the cusp of elderly. This version is poorly executed. It was transcribed from a scanned copy of the book and translated by software, instead of being typed out and proofread by someone intent on giving the story and its readers their due. As of this writing, I have read the first four in the series on , and "Mr. Midshipman" is the only one displaying this kind of slipshod mishandling.
If this is your first sailing with Hornblower, you are in for a joyful treat.
I read these books for the first time over fifty years ago. Forrester still provides compelling adventure fiction, with a surprisingly complex and interesting protagonist. The five-star rating is for the series and not any one book.
Action scenes abound and they are well done but they are just as likely to be about overcoming the perils of the sea as to involve combat. The quieter moments tell us about life at sea and develop the characters.
Where to begin. This book is one of the very best I've ever encountered. The writing style, the plots, the twists, the characters, the realism of life in the Navy, the battles, action, everything about this book sweeps the reader along.....I was casting about for something to read about The Sea, and started Mutiny on the Bounty, another good book, but put it aside as I had already read several nonfiction books about the incident. Looking for something about the sea, I remembered the series about Horatio Hornblower, looked it up on Google Wikipedia, went to and read about it, tried a sample, ten minutes later purchased this edition, and have been unable to put down the book ever since. I plan to read all Horation Hornblower novels in the order of the stories, not the publication dates, which differ. Extremely highly recommended!
C.S. Forester's Hornblower series is by far the finest collection of sea-stories of the age of sail in the English language. Not only is he a yarn-spinner without peer, his knowledge of 18th century naval warfare and seamanship is unsurpassed. I say this as a naval scholar of 18th century warfare myself (PhD, Military and Naval History, Duke U My dissertation is on "The Suffren Expedition French Operations in India during the War of American Independence, 1781-83.") Forester's hero, Horatio Hornblower, is an engaging character with foibles and weaknesses that make his courage and brilliance seem believable. The reader is therefore charmed into almost thinking that he or she can do what Hornblower does. Unlike the well-known collection by another author, the Hornblower books never drag into chattiness and detail for detail's sake. They "woosh" you along like a brisk sea-breeze of entertainment.
