I am a huge fan of Stephen King and this book is in my personal top 10 books by him -- it's an underrated gem! I purchased this on a whim and was hooked from first page to last. It was passed around between my coworkers at work who also fell in love with it! It's now a permanent fixture in our 'work library' for all to enjoy and marvel. I encouraged my coworker who was a victim of domestic abuse to read this book. After reading it, she built up the courage to remove herself from an abusive relationship (temporarily, unfortunately). We all were very proud of her and started calling her Rose Madder! The content is definitely not for the faint of heart, but it's worth powering through. ... I definitely recommend!Tags : Rose Madder [Stephen King] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Rose Madder Stephen King 9780340640142 Books Reviews
I'm a constant King reader. I reread his books. I enjoy him that much. This book is one of my favorites. I encourage anyone to read it. It's incredible, to me, that King could write such a book about battered women, from a female perspective being a man. He never ceases to amaze me. This is one you won't want to put down.
One of my favorite books by Stephen King, I wanted my own copy of it, I love the imagination and weirdness of this woman who finds an alternate life in a painting while finding her true strength. As always, King throws in his usual twists and turns to throw you off track.
This is from 1996 so this copy was lightly used, but overall in good condition. I am very satisfied with my purchase.
This story will grab hold of you from the first page--that's for sure!
The story is unusual--the villain husband is revealed as evil incarnate page by page until you have such a good visual on this guy, you start to feel he is in the room with you!
My favorite part is when he gets a small taste of his own medicine from one of his wife's friends who will protect her fellow abused woman with all of her might. I LOVED that Mr. King added this part into the book.
I liked Rose Madder more as I got some time away from it after I finished it. I had wished for a somewhat happier ending but I guess it ended the only way that it could.
A lot of people hate the mystical portrait part but I thought it was fantastic. Mysterious, descriptive, scary...it wasn't the end all be all of amazing stories by King but it was GOOD. I think some people expect all of Stephen King's books to be like Carrie or Misery or some epic story with a million dollar idea. But if you just take this for what it is--a horror story, you'll enjoy it. Forget for a moment that it's "STEPHEN KING" and just read for the enjoyment of reading. If you're looking for a book that is a simple story with a ton of heart, an absolutely terrifying villain, and a great climax, go for it!
Rose Daniels is a woman who has been married to a policeman for 14 years. Unfortunately, he has subjected her to abuse of the most extreme variety for that entire time until she is finally spurred to leave him and begin a new life. After taking a bus to a new city, she starts to build a new life but her husband, Norman, hunts for her with murderous intent.
The first half of this book is pretty strong. There were a few unlikely plot developments such as Rose being ready for a relationship with a man just a month or so after escaping 14 years of living hell with her psychotic husband. But the characters and story largely carry you along and make you want to see what happens next. The most compelling and scary parts of the book, not surprisingly, are the scenes where Norman hunts for Rose. He is one sick puppy and King is a master at wringing both suspense and humor from characters like this.
Then, the story gets hijacked by a lengthy interlude that carries Rose into a world of Greek mythology by means of a magical painting. I enjoy supernatural elements in a horror story, but in this case it feels completely out of place and tacked on to the rest of the plot. I also didn't care for King's choice to basically reveal the ending during this interlude and tell us what will happen to resolve the situation with Norman.
All in all, Rose Madder is not one of King's best books. Some parts are riveting, but I found myself struggling to get through some chapters and generally found most of the second half to be predictable and weak. If you've never read one of Stephen King's books, then you should start with one of his stronger works such as The Shining or Misery. If you're a long time fan, then go ahead and give it a try, but keep your expectations modest or you'll probably be disappointed.
This story would have been better as a plain psychological thriller without the supernatural stuff, more like Gerald’s Game. When King went into that very, very long painting-world dream sequence I got so bored I started skimming pages. Good characters but not one of SK’s best work.
I've read this story many times. It's gripping, sometimes brutal and heartbreaking, and yet hopeful all at once. The problem is the editing in this version.
Having read this story as much as I have, I can tell/ remember how the italicized thought processes are supposed to go. This version screws up just about all of them. PLEASE get the editor to get back in here and compare this version to the paperback. Because I've read the story it was possible for me to follow Norman's internal dialogue, but newcomers to the story will struggle.
Sometimes Stephen King’s most exciting books are not his most well-known publications. I had never heard of this book before I took a chance on it. I am really glad that I did so. The story is fast-moving and exciting. It centers on a battered wife struggling to escape her vicious and actually murderous husband. To make the situation even more challenging, the husband is a police detective who is skilled in tracking down suspects as part of his work. There is a supernatural element to the story as might be expected with most Stephen King novels, but the real monster in this one is a human being.
