Late Late at Night Rick Springfield 9781439191156 Books

I bought this book because i have been a huge RS fan for most of my life but only a few pages in I realized it didn't matter who this book was about because it was so well written and so very interesting I forgot I was reading about Rick! He writes as if he was speaking to you, you get a good sense of his personality (I think, as I don't personally know him...unfortunately). You can picture his story so vividly as you read every word like you are literally taken by the hand and guided through his life right by his side, and what a life it is! I felt so sad to know that he has suffered from depression since he was very young and after reading his book I got a better understanding of depression. I like how he named the depression as if it were a person, it didn't identify who he was but rather something that took hold at times. I think that anyone going through depression or knows someone who is should read this book. Rick has inspired me and I just think of all he has gone through when I'm feeling like I just can't do it. All I can say is THANK YOU RICK SPRINGFIELD for opening up and sharing yourself...esp when it could be easier to sugar coat things, and you didn't. You were brutally honest and I am grateful for that. What a talented person!!!!

Late Late at Night Rick Springfield 9781439191156 Books Reviews

Fascinating look into the world of a musician from first person perspective! Great writing with an easy to read flow, probably because I am that same creative-mind won’t stop-depressed-Aspergers person. I am amazed B stuck around when the whole world seems short sighted and unforgiving. I truly felt what he felt! Great storyteller!
It was my best friend and next door neighbor who introduced me to Rick Springfield's music. We loved that he was both an actor and a rock star and songs like Me and Johnny and Jessie's Girl felt like they were about different aspects of our long friendship. Following Tao, I lost the thread of Rick Springfield's career a bit. I thought it was me but apparently it was him too.

Reading Late, Late at Night was like rediscovering an old friend only to come to the delightful realization that there was so much more to him than I realized. The book is, by turns, tragic, funny, suspenseful and vaguely redemptive but in no way that either feels contrived or even suggests that Springfield's story is finished. Having finished this book, I find myself missing the man who wrote it, a man I'll never know. But I loved living in his universe and being along for the ride, however retroactively and vicariously.

I like memoirs. I find myself reading more musician memoirs in particular, perhaps because I too wanted to live my life for "girls, guitars and glory" at one point. And most of those memoirs require at least a passing familiarity with the subject's career and creative output. Rick Springfield's story (thus far) is so interesting, so strange, so epic and yet so relateable that you don't have to know anything about his music or his acting to enjoy it (although it adds richness if you do).
When I was but a tiny lass of five years, the very first 45 I bought with my carefully saved twenty-five-cent-weekly allowance was Rick Springfield's "Speak To The Sky." A couple of years later I bemoaned that my CCD class was held on Saturday mornings when "Mission Magic!" was on, although gratefully the local ABC affiliate would show the previous week's episode at seven a.m. so I could wake up early and catch it. By the time he scored massively with both "Jessie's Girl" and "General Hospital," I could blithely say "oh, I've been listening to/watching him for years." While my childhood obsession died down over the years I always managed to keep track of him, whether it was music or acting. When I learned that he'd written an autobiography I picked it up out of habit, expecting the same breathless ghostwritten prose that shows up in so many pop stars' "autobiographies." How pleasantly surprised I was to read this brutally honest and often hilarious tale of a guy who fought and continues to fight a lifelong battle against his demons even as outwardly he found major success.

If you're looking for a nice linear book "Late, Late At Night" will probably disappoint you. Springfield begins the book in 1979 as a failed early-seventies pop phenom, living with a girlfriend in suburban L.A. and getting occasional guest spots on TV shows while raising chickens and trying to be a stained glass artist. His well-meaning but unambitious agent gets some demos to RCA Records, and the resulting contract leads to Springfield's breakthrough album "Working Class Dog." He then goes back to his birth to an Australian army officer and his wife in a Sydney suburb and describes a nomadic lonely childhood, alleviated by his discovery of the guitar at 13. He joins bands, becomes a teenybopper sensation, and plays at army bases during the Vietnam War and joins more Aussie bands before heading to the U.S. to try his luck. "Speak To The Sky" opens some doors and he creates scandal when he dates then-15-year-old Linda Blair, but soon the doors close and the book circles back to the timing of the first chapter, but now goes on to chronicle his success in the eighties. In addition to his professional success, he also finds personal happiness in that decade, marrying his wife Barbara and welcoming his two sons. His depression, however, what he refers to as his "Darkness," keeps making relentless returns. It is a major voice in the book, taunting Springfield throughout his life. Springfield does rightfully turn the blame on himself for his various poor decisions instead of just whining "I was depressed!" so there are bonus points there.

My brother often mocked me for liking Rick Springfield when we were growing up. As it happened my sister-in-law checked "Late, Late At Night" out of the library and he picked it up out of curiosity. "Holy s***, that was awesome," he told me. "I mean `Jessie's Girl' still blows but I like this guy now." Yeah, you may be tired of "Jessie's Girl" being in endless rotation on the local classic pop station too, but "Late, Late At Night" is a fun absorbing read.

PS--I'm also sick of "Jessie's Girl". "Human Touch" is a much catchier song.
While I loved Ricks sometimes "hard to read honesty" - I have to admit feeling badly for his wife! I mean infidelity over infidelity Jeezy Pete's! I also understand the torment depression has over someone's life as I've dealt with it as well. I do have to Rick credit for letting it all out there for the world to read; he's a pretty brave soul. A great read!
I am not finished with this one either, but I love the way he tells his story. I can empathize with him on the loss of pets. I to had to move and leave behind a couple of pets when growing up. That is why I will not do that again. I also can relate to the depression voice that haunted him since his childhood. I hope that by the end of the book Mr. Springfield has come to understand what has been going on, and can say he has the strength to keep control in darkness.
