617 SQUADRON, originally formed to carry out one specific operation with a weapon specially designed for that purpose, had, by the end of the war, built up a record of individual and collective courage and skill which is unique. The story which is told in this book cannot but make its readers feel humble in the face of such devotion, such self-sacrifice, and such courage.
Nevertheless this story does more than set out the history of one individual squadron; it throws a spotlight on many of the factors which lay behind the successful and decisive employment of air power. It shows scientist, commander and operator working together as a close-knit team, each contributing towards the common aim of greater efficiency; it shows efficiency interpreted in the short term as “accuracy,” and in the long term as “maximum effect with minimum effort.” There have been those who allege that the air weapon is necessarily indiscriminate and that the aim of air power is destruction for the sake of destruction. This book is the story of a team that gave the lie to that allegation; a team whose work had a profound influence on the conduct of air operations, a team whose initiative, skill and self sacrifice on the one hand saved many an air crew who would otherwise have been lost on abortive operations, and on the other hand obviated much useless destruction and pointless loss of life in Europe. Here also is a story of inspired leadership under conditions of almost unbelievable strain, leadership at all levels—within the individual crews, leadership by the Squadron Commander and leadership by the Group Commander—leadership which inspired men to face up to, and overcome, “impossibilities.” May their example be an inspiration to us, now and in the future.

The Dam Busters eBook Paul Brickhill

This is a book I previously owned that some vanished in the halls of time. Thus, I purchased a new copy to enjoy. This book gives the story of Barnes Wallis' ideas of bombing that shook the experts to the core. It also put a nasty crimp in Der Fuhrer's steel industry. The book doesn't end with the famous raid on the dams of the Ruhr Valley but continues on to tell of the subsequebtial raid on other prime targets in Nazi Germany. It is, withal, a fascinating read that I highly recommend.

The Dam Busters eBook Paul Brickhill Reviews

great read nice to read something that isn't about USA
Back in the bad ol' WWII days, dropping a bomb on top of a dam that was 300 feet thick at the base, just wouldn't get the job done. Plus the planes of that period could not carry more than one thousand-pounder and not even that one would provide a destructive flood over the industrial valleys downstream where the German war machine was in high gear. This book details the theory and experimentation and testing of a new kind of bomb, designed--believe it or not--to skip along the surface of the lake and sink in just the right spot to provide a seismic shock against the thick foundation of the dams. Plus this huge thing had to be suspended underneath the bomber and had to be spinning backwards at just the right rate in order to skip. Daily bombardment of London added urgency to the project and great pressure to complete it. These brave airmen flew repeatedly at suicidally low altitudes through thick flack and other intense German defenses to deliver the explosive canisters at just the right angle and height and speed, and even had to improvise a new bomb-sight in order to do this. Not all of them got back to the bases in England, but lots of valleys and towns and factories were washed away when the dams were blown up. People who've always lived in the era of smart bombs and drone recon and unmanned rocket launchers, won't understand this book very well. But it's a thrilling and true re-enactment of a desperate time and a frantic response against an enemy bombing schools and hospitals in Britain every day.
A story of real men who understood evil, of brilliant minds who saved a world from a thousand years of darkness. Should be required reading of all graduating high school seniors. We should never forget the story of 617.
This book reads very quickly and it's very interesting. Written by the man who wrote The Great Escape, this is a real winner for war buffs. The book goes past the dam buster mission and the attrition rate for this wing was over 50% (if I remember the book I think it was close to 100%). Just imagine using a 4 engine Lancaster on low level mission after low level mission, the courage these men had is hard to find in todays culture. I have a LOT of respect for these brave airmen. Highly recommended book.
The book about The Raid. Coupled with Wing Commander Gibson's book, "Enemy Coast Ahead", this makes a complete story of the famous RAF raid on the dams of the Ruhr Valley in May of 1943.
Intense throughout.

I am truly amazed at the courage of these aircrew, this book is a tribute to them.
I don't know how many times I've seen the movie and could not find this particular book. It reads as fiction, but every word is fact!
